There aren’t too many cannabis-consumption methods more divisive than the blunt. For some people, the presence of tobacco — blunts are wrapped in a tobacco leaf — makes them overly harsh. For others, blunts are the preferred way to smoke cannabis.
Plus, love them or hate them, there’s no denying that they’re pretty iconic.
Learning how to roll a blunt is also more straightforward than many people think. Indeed, it’s arguably easier to roll a blunt than it is a joint. In this post, we’ll run through everything you know about learning how to roll a blunt, including why it’s worth your time, what you’ll need, and an informative step-by-step guide.
Why Roll a Blunt?
As we said above, blunts are pretty polarizing in the weed community. Some people don’t get why a smoker would choose to roll a blunt when they could (almost) just as easily roll a joint.
However, there are reasons why people do so. First of all, the presence of tobacco — remember, blunts are made of tobacco leaves — means that blunts provide an additional buzz, which can have a stimulating effect. Plus, blunts tend to have a damp, pleasurable aroma.
Finally, blunts burn more slowly than joints, which is handy if you’re planning to smoke it over a longer period of time with your friends.
What You’ll Need
As with rolling a joint, you won’t need too many items to roll a blunt. The essentials of rolling a blunt are:
Fresh, quality cannabis
A cannabis grinder
A cigar (or a blunt wrap)
You might also find it handy to have a sharp item to cut open the cigar, but it’s not essential. If you’ve got the above items, then you’re ready to roll a blunt.
How to Roll a Blunt
Irrespective of whether you’re planning to become a daily blunt smoker or not, it’s always worthwhile knowing how to roll a blunt. You never know when your skills may be called upon! Let’s take a look at a step-by-step guide on how to roll a blunt.
Grind the Cannabis
First, use your grinder to grind up your cannabis. While it’s not absolutely essential to have a grinder (cutting up your weed with scissors or your hands is also possible), you’ll find that using a quality grinder makes your blunt easier to roll and produces a much more pleasurable smoking experience.
Some people do prefer to use their hands, however, since it produces a slower burn. But for your first time, we recommend using a grinder.
Preparing the Blunt
The traditional method of rolling a blunt is to empty out a cigarillo. You can find blunt wraps for sale in most corner stores, however, so if you can’t find a cigarillo (Backwoods or Swisher Sweets are two popular brands), then you’ll always have that option.
For the rest of this guide, we’ll assume that you’re rolling a blunt using a cigarillo.
Use a razor blade, sharp scissors, or knife to cut along the cigarillo from top to bottom. If you don’t have a sharp object, then try using your hands — just be careful not to tear other areas of the tobacco leaf.
Once you’ve done that, remove the tobacco. You can throw it away if you can’t use it for any other purpose.
Add Moisture to the Blunt
You’ll find it much easier to roll the blunt if the tobacco leaf is a little damp. This is a straightforward process: simply add a few drops of tap water to your fingertips and run them over the leaf. If you’re not near a tap, you can also use your saliva, but that might not be the best option if you’re planning to share the blunt with other people!
Fill the Blunt with Cannabis
Next, fill up the space that was previously home to tobacco with your cannabis. How much you use will depend on the size of the cigar you’re using, but in general, around 1 - 2 grams is recommended. That’ll be enough cannabis while also making it easy to roll. Once you’ve perfected how to roll a blunt, you’ll be able to add more cannabis if you wish.
Aim for even distribution along the entire length of the blunt.
Roll and Seal It Up
Once the blunt is fully loaded with cannabis, it’ll be time to roll it up. Do this by placing your thumb and index fingers on either side of the exterior part of the tobacco leaf, towards the middle/top part of the cannabis.
Then gently roll it into shape. It’s important to be gentle, otherwise you may tear the tobacco leaf. If you sense that parts of the blunt are at risk of damage, then add a couple of drops of water to make it more manageable.
Once it’s rolled, lick the inside of one of the sides of the leaf to seal it. Solidify the seal by running a lighter along the sealed edge — note that you’re only trying to heat this area up, not burn it.
Enjoy
And that’s it, you’ve successfully created a blunt that’s ready to be smoked. All you need to do is gather your friends and enjoy. If you decide that you’d prefer to smoke some of the blunt later on, then keep it fresh by placing it in an airtight container.
Tips for Rolling the Perfect Blunt
Rolling a blunt is generally easier than rolling a joint, but it can still be a little tricky. Here are three tips that’ll make it more straightforward:
Use a Good Grinder
If you’re grinding your cannabis, then grind it correctly. A quality grinder will chop up your cannabis evenly, allowing for an enhanced smoking experience.
Use Enough Cannabis
Not using enough cannabis will make it difficult to roll and seal the blunt. Equally, having too much can be tricky too, especially for beginners. Aim for 1 - 2 grams.
Take Your Time
You’re not racing against the clock! Take a methodical, patient approach to rolling your blunt. Plus, don’t worry if your first attempt to roll a blunt is not a resounding success — you’ll get there eventually!
